Teeth Whitening

If you have dingy or tarnished teeth that leave you feeling too self-conscious to smile, we offer effective teeth whitening solutions at Dapto Cosmetic and Family Dental: in-chair and take-home whitening. Here’s a look at each type to help you decide which one is right for your smile needs.

Before and after teeth whiteningWant to get a gleaming smile in just one visit? With our in-chair professional whitening option, you can get dazzling results in about 90 minutes. This option is great if you have a wedding, job interview or other upcoming big event. Because in-chair whitening can be done in one visit, you can fit in your teeth whitening over an extended lunch break.

Please note that you may experience some sensitivity as in-chair whitening uses a stronger amount of whitening agent. In-chair whitening also is more expensive than take-home because the results are immediate.

Take-Home Kits

The benefit of take-home whitening is you have more control of the whitening. If you feel your teeth are getting too white, you can stop. Take-home whitening is affordable and convenient. You will receive custom-fitted trays and can control the process to determine how bright you want your smile to be.

Consider both options! We have patients who elect to do in-chair whitening and get a take-home kit to maintain their results.

Frequently Asked Questions

What about over-the-counter kits?

Many of the whitening strips and pastes that you can purchase at the chemist are not as effective because the whitening agent isn’t very strong. You also could end up with uneven whitening results—not a good look! On the other hand, professional teeth whitener treatments are safe, effective and performed under the supervision of a dental professional.

What can I do to maintain my white smile?

Teeth whitening is an investment, so you want to make sure you’re protecting your investment. You should avoid black coffee, black tea, red wine, tomato sauce and other teeth-staining drinks and foods. It’s also important to avoid tobacco, which can stain teeth. You also should brush or rinse right after consuming stain-causing drinks or foods.

Then it’s critical to follow good oral hygiene practices. Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once daily to remove plaque. It’s a good idea to use a whitening toothpaste (once or twice a week only) to brush away surface stains and prevent yellowing. Then, use a regular toothpaste the rest of the week.

Will I need touch-up-treatments?

It depends on the whitening method used. You may require a touch-up every six months or after one or two years. If you smoke or drink a lot of stain-causing liquids, you may need a touch-up treatment more often.

What if I experience tooth sensitivity?

To help you address any tooth sensitivity, we will send you home with a remineralisation gel. This gel helps alleviate sensitivity for those with sensitive teeth. It greatly decreases tooth sensitivity by hydrating the enamel and coating it with a calcium phosphate protective layer.

Is there an age requirement?

To get your teeth whitened at our practice, you must be at least 18 years of age with a parent accompanying at the appointment. A parent must sign the consent form.
