Dental Implants

What Is a Dental Implant?

Implants are comprised of a titanium screw and a post that is covered with one of the following: a crown, bridge or denture. We place the implant into the jawbone, where it supplants the tooth root. After a period of a few months, the implant attaches to the bone, so it now looks and functions like a natural tooth.

A patient must be evaluated to ensure there is sufficient bone available to secure the implant. We take impressions to provide the necessary mold for a customised implant. When the implant is ready to be inserted, your dentist cuts the gum at the insertion area to expose the bone. The implant is inserted and the gums surrounding the implant are stitched to close up the incision.

Once the implant is securely imbedded into the bone, a post is attached to it and then the dentist fabricates a permanent tooth replacement.

Dental implants can:

  • Last for the rest of your life
  • Greatly improve your appearance
  • Boost your confidence
  • Allow you to enjoy all of your favourite foods

Perhaps best of all, because dental implants are made of titanium, they never get dental decay.

First, we will have you come in for a free consult. Then, we will send you for a CT scan, Depending on your case, it may not be a straightforward procedure. You may require adjunct therapy, such as a bone graft or a sinus lift.

If you are a good candidate, we will have a second consult. At this visit, we will discuss your case, and what needs to be done. For example, will we be putting a crown on top of the implant? We also will book you in for a proper examination, checkup and clean to see if there are other areas that may need attention before an implant. That’s because the foundation of a mouth has to be healthy to get optimal results with the implant.

If we’ve determined that your foundation is healthy, we will decide on whether to do a free-hand implant or digital-guided implant. You also may need an implant with a bone graft. If you agree to treatment, we will give you a consent form to read and sign. If you are then ready to proceed with treatment, we will provide you with pre-op instructions leading up to the day of the implant as well as postop instructions.

Can anyone get an implant?

A dental implant is an option to help replace teeth that are missing. They help a patient restore function and aesthetics when required. Every patient is case selective. Not everyone can have an implant.

How do I need to maintain my dental implants?

There’s a special way that you need to clean around your implant. We will review how to do that with you.

How much does an implant cost?

We charge $4000 per implant but an additional $600 for a bone graft (if needed).

What is the success rate of a dental implant?

It varies from person to person and with health and oral hygiene habits. If, for example, you are a healthy individual who practices good oral hygiene, dental implants are highly successful, with reported success rates above 90-95 percent.
